Did you know that every шко́льник [schoolchild] in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine learns to write exclusively прóписью [ in cursive]? In schools, children spend hours perfecting their пóчерк [handwriting], carefully tracing ли́нии [lines] and refining the elegant loops of cursive with practice sheets like the one below.
But, of course, once they grow up, their handwriting evolves! My own по́черк [handwriting] today looks quite different. As you can see in this video, I don’t always connect my бу́квы [letters], and some of my strokes are far from the textbook standard!
Russian cursive, or рукопи́сный шрифт, has its roots in the earlier Cyrillic tachygraphic writing (ско́ропись, skoropis, “rapid or running script”), a form of shorthand used as early as the 15th century. By the 18th century, under the influence of латини́ца [the Latin script], Russian cursive took its modern form. Unlike in English, where cursive is often seen as a formal or decorative writing style, in Russia and other former Soviet republics, it is simply станда́ртный по́черк [the standard handwriting]!
Why Learning Russian Cursive is Essential
If you plan to read handwritten запи́ски [notes], откры́тки [postcards], or even официа́льные докуме́нты [official documents] in Russian, mastering cursive is a must. Russian speakers rarely use printed letters in everyday writing—everything from спи́ски поку́пок [shopping lists] to ба́бушкины реце́пты [grandmother’s recipes] is written in cursive! And if you ever receive a handwritten note from a Russian-speaking friend, you’ll want to be able to read it!
Plus, deciphering почерк врача́ [a doctor’s handwriting] in Russian is a skill in itself—just like everywhere else, doctors in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia are famous for their неразбо́рчивые караку́ли [illegible scribbles]!
